An older adult examines a kitchen utensil beside its open shipping box, a tablet and a measuring tape.

The product photo looks promising. The reviews sound good. Then it arrives, and the “easy-grip” handle isn’t comfortable for the person who’ll actually use it.

When you’re buying something to make daily life easier, check the return terms before checking out. The FTC recommends looking beyond the headline price and finding out who pays return shipping, whether there’s a restocking fee and how long you have to send something back.

A few minutes now can save a second errand

  • Check the actual measurements, materials and included parts.

  • Confirm who is selling the item, especially on a marketplace with several sellers.

  • Ask whether opening or trying the product affects the return policy.

  • Save the listing, return terms and order confirmation.

Give the person who’ll use it a say in the choice. A clever design doesn’t tell you whether the handle feels right or the controls make sense to them.

If the seller’s answer is vague, pause before paying. There will still be things to buy tomorrow. The goal is something useful—not another box waiting by the door.
