The Alzheimer’s Association has highlighted a new collection of research on person-centered dementia care. Published in a Journal of Applied Gerontology supplement, the work examines how care can better reflect what matters to the person receiving it—and how to measure whether that is actually happening.
The collection emphasizes including people living with dementia and their care partners in decisions. It also recognizes that staffing, resources and organizational practices can get in the way of delivering individualized support.
Why it matters for families and caregivers
For families arranging help at home, this is a useful reminder to discuss more than a list of tasks. Our practical takeaway: ask how the care team will learn the person’s routines, respect their choices, and revisit preferences as needs change. Include the person receiving support in those conversations whenever possible.
This is a research update, not an announcement of a new treatment.
